Christmas crafts aplenty

We have started our Christmas countdown. See the photos on my personal family blog
http://norfolkheavenonearth.blogspot.com/2013/12/its-beginning-to-look-lot-like.html

I was proud of the Minischoolers for rising to my challenge of sewing with tapestry needles onto our mesh Christmas trees.
I made this craft up over 15 years ago for my pre-school class on the Sunshine coast. Many of that class finished high school this year!

Here are some good links for Christmas crafts.

The sweetest beetroot relish made by our children.

I got this recipe from Not Quite Nigella who visited Norfolk island in the past year.

This is the recipe

Beetroot Relish

An Original Recipe By Not Quite Nigella
  • 500g beetroot, roasted* instructions below
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard seeds
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 3/4 cup-1 cup white or brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1/4 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 4 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons salt

We used the freshest just picked beetroot while the natural sugars were quite high.
I added chopped spring onions, coriander and orange zest also freshly picked from the garden.

While we were making things from the garden, It was time for some science fun.
Have you ever tried a purple cabbage ph experiment?
First boil some purple cabbage leaves, save the coloured water and discard the leaves (or eat them for lunch!)
When the water has cooled, keep in a clear jar or beaker so the children can experience the magic.

By adding acids and alkalines found in our kitchen, we were amazed by the water turning a combination of reds/pinks and green/blues.

Try these and see what happens to your cabbage water.
lemon juice, egg white, vinegar, baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, salt and hot sauce.

Have fun!

October Mini News

Minischool October Mini News

October was another bright and busy month for the pre-schoolers and staff up on Prince Phillip drive. We celebrated 4 birthdays, went on many more adventures discovering this wonderful island.

We also dove into history visiting 2 of the 4 museums, walking up and down the flagstaff stairs and going for bushwalks in the National park to enjoy our lunch under the tallest pine tree.
We also visited the supply ships coming to the island which brings our grocery supplies.

Our favourite outing by far was taking the entire class to sit in the front row of Charlie and the Chocolate factory. Our pre-schoolers were mesmerised from the first moment and were glued to their seats during the whole show. We were very proud of the minischoolers for being so well behaved but especially proud of the NICS staff and children for bringing such an amazing performance together for us to enjoy.

Working through the October school holidays with our preschool vacation care program, we completed some amazing art projects while studying Artists, authors and illustrators Van Gogh, Eric Carle, Shirley Barber and Franz Marc who painted the blue horse. Our sunflowers were spectacular.
We were lucky to join forces with Baunti Escapes kids club to splatter paint an outdoor dining table. It really was a work of art.

We also has friendship week where we found new ways to be great friends and show kindness to others.

please visit our facebook page https://www.facebook.com/minischoolpreschool

to view our mini newsletter notes from previous months (from May 2013) onwards.

I just want to give you a little sample of some of our lunchbox of the week winning ideas.

October

French toast with maple syrup, 3 boiled whalebird eggs, raw cashews, cherry tomatoes, raw cashews, cucumber and tomato cut into small pieces, dates and pretzels, ham sandwich, tinned pears.

A more complete list will be on the blog. We get some really good healthy for ideas as preschool. All of these lunch boxes are also rubbish free. More great food ideas for lunchboxes are in the folder at preschool or on our blog.

What did we get up to in September 2013?

September at Minischool Educational preschool Norfolk Island.

"My life should be filled with wonder, discoveries, and adventure. Take me outside. Let me get to know and love nature. I will remind you what it's like to see with a child's eyes and open heart." Let's go outside and play on the natural preschool playground!

September seems to have been merged in to the recently departed August.

Followed hot on the heels by October, but first we had better go back to all the events and daily adventures that make Minischool so fresh and inspiring for myself and the pre-schoolers.

Starting off with Father’s day, the children painted some very special pictures for their daddies. And then wrote down all of the reasons we love them so much.
While we were enjoying the strawberries, snow peas, cherry tomatoes and oranges in our garden and watching it growing bigger, we embraced the spring theme in our butterfly corner garden waiting for the first monarch caterpillar to appear on the plants specifically for them. Our worm café keeps us interested watching them devour all sorts of natural products from paper to eggshells. The worms give us great worm juice to put back into the garden so we are grateful to them. Our giant sunflowers are fascinating especially when the bees visit or a smiley face appears in the disk florets (center part of the sunflower). We are looking forward to seed saving these giants to share among our families, so everyone can have some to grow & enjoy.

Thank you to Admin for grading Prince Phillip drive, the roadwork equipment kept our boys (and the girls) entertained in its various stages of completion. I think our favourite was the rumbling grumbling roller that flattened the road and made us vibrate while standing on the side, it was almost like and earthquake one 4 year old commented.
When the road was completed, we headed for a picnic morning tea down the hill at Cockpit waterfall to read a story on the footbridge followed by some gutsy grass hill running. We are still unsuccessful in finding any geocaches that are reported to be in that area. I am hoping that if any locals can help us with finding geocaches on the island, could they please contact us as we would love to be involved in possibly hiding some in the future as well.

At the Athletics carnival we made pom poms in our team colours and headed to the school oval to support our brothers, sisters, friends and former Montessori Kinderhaus pupils. It was fun to watch them racing and gave more encouragement to our children who are commencing kindergarten in 2014. The hit of the day though wasn’t the lolly scramble; it was the school playground slide!

Our school holidays gave us some extra pre-schoolers and ‘helpers’ while having time off from their school. This was a good opportunity to have an emergency services week. We did our preschool homework learning the correct numbers to call in case of an emergency and enjoyed the role play of acting our different scenes.

The fun part was the visit to the Emergency services shed and the ride on the fire engines up and down the runway. We loved the uniforms and learning to stop drop and roll if on fire. Our local firemen were so awesome I am sure everyone went home and begged their parents to work on an evacuation plan for their house.

A few days later we visited the Norfolk Island Police station with our specially self-made constable badges and spent time in the jail cell. I think a few of our children had a bit too much fun in there dancing to the cameras and in the back of the paddy wagon. Thanks to our local police, especially Shaun and Tim for spoiling the minischoolers.

We had a great time (not sure if we were meant to have that much fun) J  Back at preschool, the 5 year old forensic team were fingerprinting all the children for their scrapbooks. Great work everyone.

We did manage to fit lots of preschool work in. There was writing letters and numbers, math equations, blended sounds, mapping and geography puzzles and so much more.

September was a busy month for birthdays too. We managed to celebrate 4 times by making our own cakes (mine was rainbow!) having a dance party, making a group card and party games.

In the middle of the month we celebrated dress like a pirate day as a fundraiser for childhood cancer. All of our children and staff dressed for the occasion at the school library as we found plenty of books to help us ‘yo-ho-ho’ and ‘ahoy there me hearties’ for the day. Thanks to all of our families for donating a gold dubloon or two to this worthwhile cause.
Minischool thanks its families for the support throughout the year.
We are constantly striving to make every day learning fun and encouraging while we learn about ourselves, our place in the community and the world we live in.

What did we do at Minischool in August 2013?

Hello everyone. Here is our August newsletter.

We kick started the month of August with a local farm tour. Thanks to Farmer Lou and Farmer Phil for allowing us to visit the Piggery. The part that the children most enjoyed was feeding broccoli to the pigs, sorting sizes from the biggest to the weeniest baby piglet, sampling the delicious bananas and calling to the Dorper sheep with their funny coats of wool. Along the drive back from Anson bay, we ticked off our checklists when we saw other farm animals along the roadside like geese, cows and calves, feral hens and roosters. We also stopped to sing happy birthday to the stable horses for their birthdays on the 1st of August. Thanks to Island eggs for their generous donation to the pre-schoolers. We put the eggs to good use during our cooking activities and studying the lifecycle of the chicken.

Back at preschool we continued on with the farm theme by making a scarecrow for our garden and mini scarecrows for our scrapbooks, writing farm inspired words and sentences, having a horse race using dice.

Using the purple cabbage from the garden, we amazed the children with an alkaline/acid science experiment which magically changed the colour of the purple juice. Details of this experiment are on our blog. The children have requested repeat performances many times since.

We enjoyed the warmer weather early in august and got to eat alfresco while enjoying the visiting rugby teams at Kingston. It was fun to cheer on Norfolk Island’s own Creaky ol’ convicts with broad arrow flags and face paint as many of our Daddies were playing in the games. This inspired us to have some off field running races to run as fast as our dads.

A big Thankyou to Kay from Norfolk Island Fitness + Health for donating some old gym equipment, we have certainly put them to good use from healthy obstacle courses for increasing our gross motor skills to becoming part of our imaginative play. Thanks again for your kindness in thinking of us.

Our next big theme that spanned over 2 weeks was ‘Space’. This gave us a chance to use lots of wonderful Montessori equipment to study the universe. We loved studying the galaxies on the ipad using starwalk and getting a closer look at satellites, planets, and types of stars. We even taught our parents about the phases of the moon and the lifecycle of a star. Our many art projects included drawing rockets, using chalk to draw the planets and shadows, making books on the order of planets and making our own name rainbow rockets. The biggest hit of the theme was when we were donated some large bottles and an idea from Ms Sarah Jenkins. We then took a trip to the hardware and newsagency to convert these bottles superfast jet packs complete with flames. These made us run very fast indeed and encouraged us to count down from 10-1 then zero. The children were great at taking turns and sharing the packs with friends. They understood how special they are when we made them ourselves.

Another favourite art recipe which will be available on our blog is for ‘moon sand’, a trough of this fine motor experience was very popular for the entire 2 weeks especially when we added alien eyes and moon dust on the second week. Thanks to one of our parents for bringing in ‘moon ice’ for another experience.

During space week we had an almighty excursion to Norfolk Island Central school for their book week celebrations. The Minischoolers all joined in the occasion by dressing up as well and were delighted to be asked to parade on the veranda stage with the rest of the school. We had pirates and cowboys, the cat and the hat and spot the dog. Even our very own teachers dressed as Mary Poppins and Fancy Nancy.

On this day there was a book fair in the library where the community were encouraged to donate $5 towards a book and receive a book plate inside the book containing the name of the donation, many of our preschool families donated as did minischool itself. The hardest part was picking which 10 books to donate from the preschool with so many wonderful titles on offer.

We appreciate the school allowing us to continue to use the school library each Thursday morning for all of  our preschool children to learn healthy reading and borrowing skills.

After the book fair we continued our big excursion day out at the post office where the wonderful staff helped us buy the stamps for the letters we had prepared to send locally and overseas. We posted them ourselves and then got to go to the mail sorting room to sort our own letters. One of our children got a big surprise to find a parcel ticket in his own box.

The children pretended to be freighted off in a large box and then enjoyed Kath’s story of Postie Kate before getting stamped before home.

Thank you so much to the Norfolk Island Postal staff and to the N.I.C.S staff for making it such a memorable day.

Phew, could we fit anything else in August…Yes we did. We finished the month and the winter season off with a Russian festival called Maslenitsa.

This Russian festival celebrates the end of the winter season and provided us with the chance to learn the cultural side of where one of our Minischool families heritage is.

We learned about the Imperial flag, the famous cathedral buildings, made Russian caramels, learned how to count and the colours in Russian as well as the unique 33 letter alphabet. It made another wonderful entry into our preschool passport.

Thank you to Lydia for showing us all of your wonderful collection of Russian artefacts. We really loved the 10 tiny matryoshka stacking dolls and the Russian crepes & pancakes you made as well as the other taste tests you provided.

From our garden we made the freshest beetroot relish fresh picked and grated within 10 minutes, It doesn’t get any sweeter than that.

A trip to the Post Office

After our book week excursion we headed to the playground for lunch and a play.

that's my mums post box
We had written some letters to friends and family locally and overseas and we were going to the Norfolk Island Post office to post them ourselves.

The staff were fabulous especially Kath. We bought our own stamps 60 cents to go on an overseas letter and 15 cents locally. We were then taken to the back sorting rooms of the post office to cancel the stamps and sort into airmail and local. Each child got to place their own letter into their postbox ready to collect on the outside.

G checked his own mail and found he had a parcel collection certificate, this was as popular as a golden ticket to the chocolate factory. one receiving his HUGE parcel from the parcel room, each child wanted to have a hold to guesstimate its weight.

The children tested out a freight box to feel what it would be like as sea mail travelling by ship to Norfolk Island.

Kath read us a story about the adventures of Postie Kate.

After a stamp on the hand it was time to be picked up.
Thankyou to the staff (and to Mandy for volunteering your time).

Mandy has now set up a post office at preschool for us to continue sending letters to each other. This is helping us with name recognition (our own and others), writing, drawing and other fine motor skills.
