What did we do at Minischool in June 2013?

June 2013

Kids on the Rock Educational Preschool News - JUNE 2013

We had an amazing Bounty week and hope you all did too.

Ours was full of parties, first a Farewell party for one of our Pre-schoolers who moved off island and will be missed by all the children and staff then a Birthday Party for someone special who turned 5.

Keeping with the theme of Bounty week we brushed up on our Norf’k studies, knowledge and Norf’k langwij. On the Norfolk Island map, we can follow the 170km worth of roads to see where we and our friends live. It is good to know our place in the world. We filled our scrapbooks with more fantastic artworks based on these.

After the Queens Birthday Holiday weekend was put back a week, we spent the past week extending our knowledge of British History and the Monarchy. We drew the crown jewels and the union flag and learned that it is only supposed to be called the Union Jack when it is flying on a ships mast. (Jack liked this best of all J )

I have to share this funny quote that has been entered into our preschool book of funny quotes; An hour after describing the current queen, I asked the children if they remembered what her name was. 2 Four year olds bravely answered, 1 asked "Is it Queen Belinda?" The 2nd said "No its not, I remember. Is it Queen Lizard Next?"(Elizabeth). The Preschoolers say the funniest things.

Our lunchbox of the week folder continues to fill with seasonal food ideas provided by the parents in their children’s lunchboxes. This folder is available for all parents to gain inspiration when stuck for lunchbox ideas. Extra points for rubbish free lunchboxes also.

At the moment we are harvesting from our permaculture vegie garden which is bursting with life and resembling a jungle of edibles. We pick and eat beans, herbs, oranges, strawberries, lettuce, silverbeet and beetroot leaves daily. Last week we made an impromptu Spinach herb pie in the preschool kitchen for lunch with fresh off the tree orange slices on the side…mmm.

Next week we start to harvest the beetroot and carrots as well as our snowpeas, we can’t wait!

Excursions- As well as our weekly trip to NICS library we also had a trip to the airport and walk to Pop’s corner next to the Emergency services shed, a long walk from preschool to The National Park on Red road, an excursion to see the Georgian architecture at Kingston (especially the keystones that hold up our arches) and then a quick visit to all the children’s parents at their workplaces.
